A few weeks ago we posted an article about the National Weather Service asking for travelers and people to tweet the current weather conditions via Twitter using geocoordinates and the hash tag “#wxreport.” We would like to hear your opinion about this article. We have included it below for reference. If you would like to comment register for an account on our web site and you can post comments as soon as your account is verified.
You may be wondering about how you can connect one weather station to multiple computers in your local network. It is possible with Virtual Weather Station and the appropriate file sharing permissions on your network. If you are running Windows XP or above it is possible to enable guest file sharing with read only access to your Virtual Weather Station directory and allow users of your home or work network to remotely connect and download data from a single weather station.
A web site called FloppyMoose has published a CSS script that allows users to turn their Firefox or Safari browser into an automatic ad blocker. Tonight I discovered that by expanding CSS functions in the FloppyMoose CSS File “userContent.css” you can expand your iGoogle experience.
You will notice that on iGoogle from time to time that they have a Sandbox message for donations or a way to place a quick ad. You will also notice that if you try and customize your theme on iGoogle to include your own picture it won’t always expand to the header’s width of the page.
When you place an image in your own custom iGoogle page make sure it has a minimum width of 1200 px. Google might not take the image the first few times so you will need to upload it to Google’s photo web service first and then add it to a custom iGoogle theme.
Last week there was a major earthquake that shook Hati and surrounding regions in the Caribbean. Currently the USGS is still reporting that more earthquakes are following in the region causing more destruction. In response to the earthquake government offices such as the National Weather Service have given Hati things such as weather observation stations and also supplies to the region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) this week released a new prototype to inspire users of the cloud service Twitter to report their current weather conditions at their location. Using geocoding and hash tags, the NWS is asking for people to try this new service while they collect information to see how it could change storm reporting and citizen weather observations.
Today I added some updates to the Weather Updater that is located in the right-hand side of the blog page. I also have updated some of the site to make it fully XHTML compliant.
The previous weather updater did not include support for some of the native Virtual Weather Station components, but I have fixed it that Virtual Weather Station will upload data to the site instead of the site pulling it from the server. I have also included a snapshot of the weather camera located in Perkasie in the Rapid Weather Updates.
In easier terms: I have enabled faster data access to weather information provided by my weather station.
In the next version I will try and provide weather stickers as well as some code to share for those who want to try the Virtual Weather Station components on their own servers or hosting providers.
Data should be flowing to the web site every 3-7 seconds and the page in the Internet browser should be updating every 3-8 seconds (depending on server load).
